Particular sectors of the population Essay Abstract The point of this paper is to help the reader grasp the different aspects of human identity construction with regards to ones race and/or ethnicity. This is a topic that is incredibly important to all races of people regardless of economic class or whatever else is seemingly more important. It is quite impossible to go throughout life without forming an idea of who you are or where you have come whether you care to make it a part of your daily life, have no choice or acknowledge it when it is convenient; without that knowledge I find it difficult to fully make the most of life. Through the readings from the semester and class discussions I have come to the conclusion that White ethnics choose to either assert their ethnicities thickly or thinly, or they chose to incorporate it into their lives symbolically. Blacks on the other side of the spectrum lack choice in their racial identity because their race is visible and so it is assigned to them. Asians have both the ability to choose to assert their specific ethnicities but they are racially assigned. The issue with racial and ethnic construction is that it is born of social construction-what others believe of your race to be true. This can make the identity construction process much more difficult depending upon your racial or ethnic background. Regardless, I find this to be an important part of the identity construction journey. How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone. These words were spoken by the infamous French fashion designer, Gabrielle â€Å"Coco† Chanel. In America today, these words could not ring truer in the subject of identity. â€Å"Who am I? †, â€Å"Where do I come from? † All questions of self reflection which undoubtedly each individual asks themselves on a daily basis. These questions are not elaborate in structure but hold a great deal of weight to them and contain countless answers. White ethnics face the decision of whether or not to include their ethnicities into their identity construction; their racial invisibility gives them the choice to identify. Racial minorities self define differently from those of the white majority-there often is no choice. There are many different facets of identity construction that create the varying formulas with which Black Americans must create their racial identity. The blatant visibility of race for Blacks creates many of the difficulties that they face in the United States varying from the generalized stereotypes, entry into the coveted middle class of America. These are some of the factors that determine whether or not a positive Black identity is being formed. Lastly, Asian Americans, have found themselves in that strange middle ground of identity construction; their struggle is not exactly like that of Black Americans but they are also not easily accepted like the dominant white group. The unique factors that help Asian Americans shape their identity are the same ones that make it difficult for others outside of their race to define them. It is with this unusual combination that Asian Americans have been given the convenient ability to choose to assert their specific ethnicities and to assimilate like white ethnics while still feeling the effects of racial constraint and having their race assigned to them like Black Americans. White Ethnic Identity Construction Today we look at the possible ways the white racial group define themselves; how they appear to others of their same race as well as to non-whites and the impact of American societal expectations on the self, ultimately creating a portrait of how white ethnics construct their ethnic identity throughout the generations and the evolution of ethnic value over time. It is all too common to hear an individual say â€Å"I don’t care what people think of me† or â€Å"Their opinion doesn’t matter,† although that may be their thought process, little do they know that it is the interaction with other human beings that helps form each person’s sense of self and that every person’s opinion of you matters a great deal. â€Å"Identity cannot exist apart from a group†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Gans, 1991, p. 430). Each person bounces their personality off of other people and it is from their reactions to us that we base our identities on. This idea is called â€Å"The Looking Glass Self† developed by Charles Cooley. Cooley argues that every time we interact with another person, we see ourselves in a mirror that they hold up to us and our reflections shape our sense of self (Butler-Sweet, 2011, Sep. 20). Essentially our self definitions are based on how others see us. We cannot escape it, the society that we live in is based on interaction with other people and humans, by nature are visual; we judge first by what we see. This is why race is the defining factor in American society but mainly for non-whites. The white race in America is dominate, however, it is not dominate because of the race itself but because of the culture that was formed from it. This idea of â€Å"whiteness† stems from European ideals where historically white ethnics had the most education and were Christians opposed to the non-Christians who were also not white. When Europeans came over to America they brought these ideals with them and used them as a foundation for the new culture they were creating that placed large emphasis on church, family, and accumulating wealth and with that social status (Zack, 1998, p. 61). These ideals were the foundation of American culture and since this culture was created by whites, American became synonymous with white, white became the norm and therefore transparent. If you are white in America it is highly unlikely that you will notice your race on a daily basis unless you are placed in a situation where you are surrounded by non-whites and forced into awareness. It is a definite advantage to have your race be invisible to everyone; when you are accustomed to seeing something, you do not think about it. That being said, according to the â€Å"Looking Glass Self†, hardly anyone, white or non-white will reflect a white person’s whiteness to them. Having race viewed as insignificant in a white individual’s identity. Due impart, to the diminished importance of race to white identity construction, ethnicity among white ethnics is a choice. White ethnics can decide if they want their ethnicity to be a part of what shapes their identity and if they do chose to assert an ethnicity they chose once again if they want to assert it thickly or thinly. Growing up in Connecticut, I know that there is not as wide a variety of ethnicities as there could be among white ethnics but in a few of the less suburban areas in Connecticut, namely New Britain, certain white ethnics choose to thickly assert their ethnicity. In New Britain there is a large population of Polish white ethnics; they speak the language and have ethnic markets and restaurants. They choose to incorporate their ethnicity into their everyday lives and associate with those of that same ethnicity. On the flip side, in my suburban hometown of Farmington, Connecticut, there were a decent amount of Polish people who attended my high school however, most choose to thinly assert their ethnicity mostly by only claiming their ethnicity when it came to soccer or eating polish food during the holidays. The importance of ethnicity to white ethnics is often asserted thinly if at all. The amount of emphasis placed on the value of ethnic identity among whites is not the same as it has been in times past; the emphasis has now been placed on American culture and what is considered valuable. If white ethnics choose to include their ethnicity in their identity today, it would most likely be symbol of what once was. When Europeans first came to America from whichever country, their original ethnic background was everything. The language, food, traditions, clothing and music was a constant influence on their everyday lives as first generation Americans. Community ties to people of your same ethnicity were incredibly important as it was an extension of your immediate family. Being the â€Å"new kids on the block† so to speak, was what kept these ethnic communities very tightly knit however, each generation after began to slowly back away from those original ties and started to assimilate into the dominate American culture. The acculturation process starts in second generation white ethnics where original ethnic traditions that they grew up with become not as important because now, fitting in to the dominate culture is the way to progress. The third generation white ethnic, has fully assimilated into American culture and has little interest in their ethnicity because by now they have figured out that in being a white ethnic, they fit into the dominate culture and ethnicity is not necessary. It may not necessarily be a hindrance to their economic, intellectual or social success, but it also is not a part of them that they feel needs to be asserted; it is at this point, that ethnic symbolism begins to show up (Gans, 1991, p. 430). Through intermarriage and acculturation, third generation white ethnics and beyond often know little about their ethnicity or by now ethnicities. Sometimes there are so many ethnicities to choose from, from either parent that a white ethnic will simply pick out the stereotypes of a certain ethnicity in their genetic arsenal that they feel they can identify most with as a way of feeling ethnic of their ethnic identity. Physical traits are often used as the indicator for which ethnicity a white ethnic will chose to identify with; one of my closest friends is Luxembourgian, German, Scandinavian, Swedish, Norwegian, and Scottish. Despite the fact that her last name itself is German, she chooses to associate her fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes with her Scandinavian and Swedish ethnicities; this is probably in large part due to her mother’s family who’s history holds more interest to her as well as people who look the most like her. She uses her physical features as symbols of her ethnicity, nothing more. It is often that if one side of the family is more vocal about a certain ethnicity or ethnicities within the family that as a result, the children will associate more with that ethnicity or ethnicities (Waters, 1998, p.60). The majority of white ethnics are of the upper middle class in American society because the race is not a constraint for them and so they have access to jobs and to education that non-whites may not have. This American culture or â€Å"whiteness† by itself leads to a sense of monotony to some white ethnics and so the symbolic ethnicity comes into play as a way to liven things and bring back a since of individuality; to not be â€Å"just American† (Waters, 1998, p. 90). Non-whites in America maintain their ethnicity and embrace it because they are not given as equal a chance to assimilate into the dominate culture and without that opportunity, they are cut off from the jobs, that would provide money to become educated and progress in the American way and therefore stay very rooted in their original culture and maintain a strong sense of community which many white ethnics do not have. The constraints of white ethnic identity are few. The invisibility of whiteness gives white ethnics a definite upper hand and even further so, when it comes to their ethnicity they can make the choice. The possibilities for white ethnic identity and furthermore, their identity as a whole would seem to be very flexible. They lack only, it would seem when it comes to the sense of community. In the American culture, as it has evolved into today, the majority population’s focus is on wealth and social status and so nothing else comes to matter. White ethnics as a whole suffer little if any because, being the dominant race and culture; it is rare to find any door closed; the invisibility of their race gives them an unseen advantage which racial minorities do not have. Black Racial Identity Construction As mentioned previously in discussing white ethnic identity construction, Cooley’s Looking Glass self was a prime factor in how identity is shaped, particularly for Black Americans. The mirror that is continuously held up to each Black person is a constant reminder that their race is a large part of how others define them. Unlike the dominant White group, race is nowhere close to being invisible for Blacks. W. E. B DuBois applies the basic idea of Cooley’s looking glass self, most specifically to the Black minority group with this concept of a â€Å"double consciousness† (Butler-Sweet, 2011, Nov.3). Much like the looking glass, the double consciousness stresses that you will never be able to truly see yourself if you are of the Black minority group because others will see your race first and automatically reflect a negative image. If this double consciousness continues it can create, what Cornell West calls a Nihilistic threat; internalizing the negative impressions of your racial group and therefore yourself. Beverly Daniel Tatum points out in her book â€Å"‘Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? ’† that young children do not view racial differences as an issue but rather as a topic of curiosity, however, as the child reaches, what she calls, the â€Å"encounter stage† around adolescence race becomes very noticeable and if parents are not careful, their child will internalize all of the negative connotations of what it is to be Black (p. 55). The rest of that child’s life they will be reminded daily of their race, not necessarily in demeaning racial slurs, but in indirect forms of racism and prejudices. Unlike their White counterparts, Black Americans do not have the privilege of letting their race be invisible in society. Being the dominant group, White is expected and accepted-their race is invisible but as a minority group, Blacks do not have the choice of blending in; race is not only an assigned part of one’s identity if you are Black but it is thickly assigned which creates the boundaries and sense of separateness among the different racial groups. Identifying oneself as Black is essential for a member of the Black minority group if they wish to avoid self conflict. Wishing that you were not Black or attempting to be something other than Black only exasperates the issue. This negative view has to do with prejudices which transformed into stereotypes about Black Americans and translated into the negative Black identity which Black adolescents begin to form and even take with them into adulthood. Ones view of what it means to be Black can be fuelled primarily through stereotypes which can lead to a disdain of your own race. This could be expressed in a need to be the opposite of all those stereotypes, which was manifested as the Black kid not sitting at the all Black table (Tatum, 1997, p. 67). He refused to associate himself with those of his race because of the stereotypes that were reflected through â€Å"the looking glass. † This can at times be rectified later in life through exposure to positive examples of Black peoples, particularly those who are college educated. According to the double consciousness, the fact that you are Black is already assigned and therefore asserting it further, is unnecessary. The idea that having a positive Black identity is contingent upon putting your race first is redundant because it is already visible to everyone you come in contact with. It is as if you are a book and your race is the plastic covering around it; people cannot open the book because the plastic is sealed so tightly around it. In order for there to be a positive black identity all that is necessary is a full acceptance of your race and the positive aspects of it. The presence of positive Black role models in the life of a Black youth early on encourages a positive Black identity and expels most of the widely spread negative stereotypes. (Tatum, 1997, p.55). With largely widespread negative views on Black Americans as a whole and stereotypes being perpetuated regularly it is easy for a Black person to feel victimized; caged into a role even. The most readily available images of Black people in the media are often those that portray blacks in dire, downtrodden striates or extreme poverty. Sadly, this generalized portrait of Black Americans is overly, the dramatized and filled with gang violence, illegal drug sale, and so on. This type of life has been glorified in popular music; rappers especially speak of having been poor and having to live in the projects-the only way to survive being crime. Whatever is most commonly projected will be the easiest to accept as your only choice if you are Black. Lack of funding in lower income communities, the majority of which are populated by Black Americans, create low grade schools decreasing the ability or even the possibility for Black minorities to go on to higher education. America is a country built on capitalism; if one group cannot keep up with the dominant group financially they will fall back. Only 30% of Black Americans are impoverished but as a whole, are widely accepted as poor because of the media’s attention on densely populated, majority black communities (Butler-Sweet, 2011, Nov. 10). When this negative view becomes the norm, it is hard for Black youth to see much else, which is often why the minority of Blacks who rise above the negative stereotypes their racial identity is questioned by others of their same race. Since the idea of a middle class and the suburbs is a social class largely dominated by the dominant white group, some would find Black Americans as a part of that middle class to be an oddity. It is automatically assumed that because the White race is dominate in American society that they would have the jobs, the wealth, education and ability to enter seamlessly into the middle class realm and above. However, racial prejudices and stereotypes have made it so that it is quite uncommon to find a Black family in a predominantly White suburb; the symbol of the middle class. Somehow, through hard work, sacrifice or well-off parents, Blacks have managed to go on to higher education and thereafter; higher paying jobs, earning them a spot in the middle class. Unfortunately, this kind of success among Black people of the middle class does not sit well with those that live below it. It is the truest statement to say that personally, growing up in a largely White suburb, endured an intense inquisition about my racial affiliation from my Black peers who were bused in from Hartford. I was told that I â€Å"dressed White†, â€Å"talked White†, and many a time that I was in fact White or an â€Å"Oreo† as they would put it. Many of my White friends would joke around with me that I was not Black. There is nothing more offensive than being told, in so many words, that because your parents were educated, held well paying jobs, bought a house in the suburbs and educated you in a majority White school system, that you were no longer Black; worse even, being scrutinized and ignored by people of your own race because of a difference in social class. Tatum speaks of the same issues in her book, she even states how important it is for young Black people in predominantly White communities to connect with other Black peers to share experiences and increase awareness of daily life outside of the suburbs (Tatum, 1997, p.69-70). One would think that coming to a university with a larger community of Blacks than in my high school would open doors, but sadly I find that the divide is almost completely the same. The Black friends I have made since attending the University of Connecticut have been ones that share a similar background as myself; rarely do non-suburban Black people and I become friends and it is not for lack of effort on my part. I would like to think that I keep a positive attitude towards both Whites and Blacks but because of the stereotypes so deeply ingrained in many of us, it is difficult to lay them down and redirect our way of thinking. It is this reason, among others why other racial and sometimes ethnic minorities have difficulty being accept in America, Asian Ethnic and Racial Identity Construction The entrance into America for Asians is considered to be the first wave of immigration. This wave is relatively recent beginning in the early 19th century with the Chinese who immediately moved out west where the work they were given was largely agricultural. Like all immigrants coming into the United States, the Chinese, Japanese and later other groups like Filipino, Korean, and Vietnamese, among others, all faced discrimination from the dominate White group. When the Chinese first entered they were very hardworking and skilled while working on the transcontinental railroad but having not been in America long enough and having so many Chinese coming in their seemingly flawless work ethic was viewed as a threat by their fellow White workers. After the Chinese Exclusion Act was put into action in 1882, Japanese immigrants began to make their way into America but the same thing happened to them. Their advanced skills in agriculture were considered a threat to the Whites. They were taking their jobs and since farmland is not something that goes away, the Japanese were able to establish themselves a little better than the Chinese (Butler-Sweet, 2011, Nov. 28). The manner in which the group entered into the United States is the reason why their history is so important to their formation of a positive Asian American identify. The entrance of the various Asian groups into the United States and the acceptance of them were bound to be a bit difficult. The size of the group was large enough to be considered a threat to the dominant white group and because they had a tendency to settle down together, making it difficult for them to assimilate into American culture. The second wave of Asian Immigration is a part of present day America and this idea of being threatened by the skillfulness of Asians is still something that the dominant group feels and makes a point to mention often. In the first wave of immigration, the Chinese and Japanese succeeded because the work they found in the United States involved the use of skills they had already cultivated in their specific countries and so the excelled. Here in this second wave it is the same thing; whatever the Asian group is good at in their places of origin are the skills they will take with them when immigrating and that is why this idea of the Model Minority Myth has been created (Monk, 1996, p. 31). Asian American’s ability to succeed so effortlessly it seems, in large part can be attributed to the fact that much like the dominant White group, Asian Americans have the ability to assert their specific ethnicities. Similar to Black Americans, Asian Americans have an assigned race; when it comes to their ethnicities, which hold more value to them than their race, it is of greater significance to how they identify. However, non-Asian groups tend to lump every Asian ethnicity under one â€Å"Pan Asian† label but Asian Americans refuse to accept this (Kibria, 2002, p.73-74). Instead of agreeing with the reflection they see from other people about their race, as mentioned previously in regards to Cooley’s â€Å"Looking Glass Self†, Asian Americans place a great amount of emphasis on their specific country of origin and its traditions and cultures in order to define themselves. In the first wave of immigration, Asian Americans would settle in closely knit communities with their specific ethnic group; in those communities, they would all help each other out making it easier to survive in America. Even today, there are large communities of Asian Americans who choose to live close to each other to keep that sense of having a culture and traditions that separate them from everyone else. Having these tightly knit communities makes it easier for Asian Americans to succeed because they have a constant support group and people to fall back on if they need it (Monk, 1996, p. 37-38). Being in such constant close contact with those who share your culture background and infuse it into daily life definitely helps with forming a positive Asian American identity, regardless of outside influences. Some of the dominant White group believes that if given the chance, over time Asian Americans could have the potential to fully assimilate to American culture and become ultimately â€Å"white. † This idea of racial ethnogenesis is that the later generations of Asian Americans as well as incoming groups of Asians will simply begin to blend into American culture to the point that they will just embrace the racial category they have been placed in and forget about their ethnic background (Kibria , 2002, p. 14). What would this do for the identity construction of Asian Americans? Would their full assimilation into American culture really improve their quality of life anymore? The identity construction of Asian Americans would be so unlike every other identity if they simply assimilated completely into American culture. Letting go of cultural ties and accepting the general name for people of your same race will not improve the quality of life significantly because their race is still visible. Again, culture is a choice, race is not. Although Asian Americans are capable of choosing their ethnic identity and asserting it like the White ethnics, they also share the disadvantage of being assigned to their race like Black Americans because their race like Blacks is very visible. Since their race is visible it creates this aspect of constraint which makes it difficult for people to not see your race and therefore puts limits on how people will treat you or what jobs you can attain. Regardless of the success Asian Americans have in academics and achieving higher paying jobs, there is still a â€Å"glass ceiling† they have to deal with (Monk, 1996, p. 42). The visibility of their race keeps them from being hired as corporate CEOs or being in leadership positions in general. Excelling most commonly in mathematics and sciences often places Asian Americans in behind the scenes type of work that pays well but does not require them to be out in the open as public figures in the corporation. The added factor of an accent for more recent immigrants can also serve as additional restriction to entering into the higher echelons of business (Monk, 1996, p. 43). The positive connotations that come with being Asian American as well as the negative can have an adverse affect in identity construction. Being considered to be a â€Å"Model Minority† definitely can create some hostility especially for second and third generation Asian Americans. When non-Asians assume that you get A’s in school and that you are inherently good at mathematics it becomes a burden (Kibria, 2002, p. 87). Just the same, negative stereotypes about the foods that different Asian American cultures eat or assuming that because certain physical features are similar among the different ethnic groups, they are all the same, can create negative feelings about being Asian American and that is not good for the development of a healthy ethnic or racial identity. The saying â€Å"Asian Invasion† (Monk, 1996, p. 44) is very common I personally even have used it in jest and so have some of my Asian friends; I assumed that its use was okay. Generally, my second generation Asian friends will use this term when talking about either the Asian students who are studying abroad on campus, or in regards to first generation Asian Americans. This makes me wonder if my friends have assimilated enough into the dominant white culture that they no longer can see themselves associating with the incoming Asians. It is hard to determine whether the statement is meant as a joke or a commentary against ethnic Asians. Conclusion Having explained the different forms of identity construction through the examples of White ethnics, Black Americans and Asian Americans it has been made clear that identity construction cannot be viewed the same for a ethnicities and races. White ethnic identity comes in many different shapes sizes and forms ranging from symbolic, non-exisistent, or thinly asserted to a large part of how one identifies or thickly asserted. The option to pick and chose which part of your heritage you prefer over another or not at all is how white ethnics construct their identities. The majority of white ethnics who choose the route of symbolic ethnicity opposed to asserting either thinly or thickly a certain ethnicity is often because the dominant American culture has become of greater value to their identity than anything else and choosing an ethnic symbol to place on themselves is what will separate them from the rest of their fellow white ethnics or bring them closer to someone who holds the same ethnic symbol. Just the same, the constant pressures placed on Black Americans to play multiple roles are a difficult task. Shaping a positive identity of any kind is difficult but to shape a positive Black identity in America holds a certain amount of extra weight to it. Black Americans struggle trying to advance themselves because of the constant racial stereotypes reverberating in the background. If you do manage to elevate into the higher ranks of American life your racial loyalty will then be questioned. Is it possible that over time these stereotypes will dissipate or is there a reason they are kept alive? The unique combination of both ethnic choice and racial constraint makes Asian American identity construction the most interesting form of identity construction so far. Since the first wave of immigration into the second one, Asian Americans have dealt with a slew of racial injustices in America but they have also gained a great deal of merit mostly for being the â€Å"ideal† so to speak. Being hard workers and keeping close ethnic ties have made Asian Americans competition for White ethnics. In the future, whether or not they will completely assimilate or not is questionable and what toll it will take on their identity construction. Having the option to choose a part of your identity which no one can see will never outweigh your racial assignment. What is it, or is it possible to have a truly positive White ethnic or Black or Asian racial identity in America? The constant changes in society make it impossible to know.

Thesis   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Do you believe that one’s words can reflect on a certain person’s action? Today, Rap has become the most popular type of music in the US. The Rap industry is dominated by artists’ who mostly dedicate their lyrics to either violence, drugs, or sex. Through 1998 and 1999 the survey taken by the National Music Bureau, stated that 46% of the listeners of Rap are under the age of 19. While 65% of the listeners, live in run-down homes, or impoverished areas, usually being inner cities. The National Music Bureau also reported that in the 66% of the listeners of Rap who are under the age of 19, 86% of those teen-agers are black. Along with that fact, many of the artists sing about their ghettos, and their past ways of life, which included, drugs, sex, murder, and alcohol. The listeners of rap living in run down areas in the inner cities see themselves in the same situation as many of the rap artists’, and duplicate what they hear. So although a person may be responsible for his or her action, rap music dramatically affects the lives of America’s inner cities and slums. In this day and age, of the biggest problems in America has become teen pregnancy. 68% of 18-year old have had sexual intercourse, while half of 17-year old have had sexual intercourse. To add to that, 6 in 10 girls between the ages of 18-19 become pregnant. Biggie is promoting sexual activity, and a bad message is being sent out to all women. Another important fact is that every year 3 million teens; about 1 in 4 sexually experienced teens acquire a Sexually Transmitted Disease (S.T.D). Another rapper, â€Å"Mast a’ Pimp† begins each song by saying â€Å"Pimpin’ Aint Easy!† In a song by Masta’ Pimp titled â€Å"The Way of Life,† Masta’ Pimp says â€Å"From the ghetto to where all my hooches at, I’ll ride for life, f$%# da condoms, ‘cause I’ll f$%@ all da’ bitches for life.† While Masta’ Pimp talks about his â€Å"hooches† in his ghetto, 60% of sexually active teens between the ages 15-19 ... ...n the cities of New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Detroit. Also, in 37% of violent crimes committed in inner cities, the offender was high on some sort of drug, usually being marijuana. The bureau also stated proved that in 20% of un-planned pregnancies, one of the participants was intoxicated. And, 92% of the time the baby came out with a deformity. When researching what kind of affect rap has on America’s inner-cities, there is only one conclusion to come to. Yes, many people may say that people should be able to take responsibility for their own actions, but the statistics, and the eye-witness encounters has proven that rap does have a negative affect on America’s inner-cities. In my case I would have breakfast during my study hall which was 3rd period, then I would have lunch which was 4rd period. I would have to force myself to eat or else I would be hungry the rest of the day. If we had lunch too late, we would not be able to concentrate in class because while we were working silently on our work we could hear our stomach growling, students that were sitting around us would just laugh. I remember that when that would happen to me I would start turning the pages of my book real fast so that the students around me couldn’t hear me. When I was in high school most of the students were mean and unfriendly. It was really hard to make friends, at least for me it was, and to be placed in a lunch period where you didn’t know anyone wasn’t easy. Our high school had a big cafeteria that could be divided into three smaller rooms, but they would never open up the walls. The reason for this was that there had been a huge fight once and they didn’t want any more confrontations. Each room had a name, they were named Commons A, Commons B, and Commons C. We weren’t able to pick the common in which we wanted to be in. The school, to make our life more miserable, would also give us assigned seats. One thing that I can’t complain about and that my classmates are probably going to look at me right now for saying this is the food. I went to Belvidere High School and I loved the food! I would look forward to lunchtime every day just because of the food. Till this day I have not found alfredo sauce that is as good as the one that they just to give us in high school. One thing that I would hate in high school was how they would run the schedules. They would give us too much time for one thing and not enough for another. We would go into a classroom for 15 minutes and do nothing. This class period was called home room. The teacher was supposed to inform us of changes that would be going on around the school, but they never would. We would sit there for 15 minutes of our life and basically do nothing. The teacher herself didn’t know what was going on. They also need to take away study hall, people didn’t do their homework during study hall. They would just sit there and talk, they wouldn’t even bring their books to study hall. Instead of getting study hall we should get more gym time. I mean, 45 minutes isn’t enough to actually exercise. By the time that we are done getting dressed we only have about 35 minutes left. Then the teachers instead of hurrying up the students, they’re over there having conversations with the other gym teachers . Then they take forever to take attendance. By then time they’re done explaining what were actually doing that day, we have like 25 minutes left of gym, not including the 5 minutes they give us at the end of the class period to get changed. 20 minutes is not enough time to run a gym class. We can’t exercise, sweat and take a shower in that little time and then the media complains that the students are obese. The method that some teachers have of teaching is absolutely awful. My Spanish teacher for native speakers was really nice and got along with everyone. All the students would talk so well about her, they would always say positive things about her. Probably because they never did anything while they were in her class. The only thing was that she was horrible at teaching. Well, it wasn’t that she was horrible at it, it was just that she wouldn’t teach anything. I remember she got sick and was out for three months. During that time we literally did not do anything. I remember that the substitute would just look at us and he would ask us what would we usually do, we would look at him, smile and answer â€Å"nothing†. Don’t ask why, but this was the second year that I had taken Spanish class with her, so when she came back she told us that most of us had been with her for two years so she would give us a grade based on what we had gotten the year before. I took that class to improve my writing in Spanish, to learn the proper grammar, but I did not achieve any of that. The English teachers weren’t as bad as the Spanish teacher, but we still didn’t accomplish much. The only time that I remember writing an essay in high school was junior year. Maybe it had to do with the school that I was in. My junior year of high school I went to Belvidere High School instead of Elgin High School. In Belvidere High the teachers were a little more strict, at least that’s what I thought. Until I found out that the only teacher that had ever assigned me to do an essay had been with one of the students. I was completely shocked because she had always been very professional about her job. Even though there’s a lot of negatives things with the high school that I went to, I still enjoyed every minute of it. I got to meet new people and experience new things. Sure my high school wasn’t the best, but I am still thankful that I received a basic education. The only thing that I do regret is not going to prom. I told myself that if no one asked me to prom that I wouldn’t go. Nobody ended up asking me so I didn’t go. I lost the chance to experience something that you only get to experience once in your life. So enjoy your high school while you can because once you are out, there is no turning back.

Examining The Objective Of Industrial Training Information Technology Essay Industrial Training (OMT 330) course is compulsory to all students that taken a Diploma in Office Management and Technology program under Mara University of Technology. During the course duration, students need to follow practical training for 15 weeks that as many 4 hour credit. The objective of Industrial Training is to allow practical students to the opportunity to apply the theoretical part of knowledge obtained in academic programs to a practical work experienced. The major purpose for Office Management students is to go through this course so they can gain experiences in administration and management in the organization. An additional objective of this course is to present exposure to the OM114 trainers about the preparation, adding knowledge and to move up their skills in their workplace, along with raising their self-confidence for going into the real world of employment. Beside that, OM114 students also obtained their experiences about the agencies and how the staff in the agencies administrated efficiently. We was able to understand a movement of the duty or the job that given. We also found that each section of agencies always needs cooperation with each other. The purpose of this report is as the evidence that I was done a practical and for my reference in the future. Then, it also requires 30% from the overall grade. Lastly, the most important of the existence of this course, a student will be able to learn and know everything about an agency which I havent know before this. THE HISTORY OF UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA Dewan Latihan Rida (Rida Training Center) 1956 1965 RIDA Training Center was the inspiration of Dato Onn Jaafar, the founder and former president of United Malays National Organization (UMNO). The idea was conceived as a result of a study visit of Sri Lankas rural development programmed in 1951. A working paper of the visit outlined the establishment of RIDA and its objectives of rebuilding the rural society, as well as improving its economy. There were two centers under the auspices of the Rural and Industrial Development Authority: Taman Asuhan RIDA (Kuala Lumpur) and Dewan Latihan RIDA (Petaling Jaya). Dewan Latihan RIDA began operations in November 1956 under its first principal, Tuan Syed Alwi bin Syed Sheikh Alhadi. It was officially opened by Dr. Ismail bin Dato Abdul Rahman, the Minister for Trade and Industry on 14 February 1957. In 1964, Dewan Latehan RIDA held its first convocation and 50 graduates were awarded certificates by Tun Abdul Razak, the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Maktab Mara (Mara College) 1965 1967 Dewan Latihan RIDA become known as Maktab MARA or MARA College in June 1965.The name change also meant that the college no longer operated under RIDA and instead become the most important unit of the MARA Training Division. Institut Teknologi Mara (Mara Institute Of Technology) 1967 1999 MARA College was officially renamed Institut Teknologi MARA on 14 October 1967. Its establishment came as a response to a crucial need in the country for trained manpower in the professional and semi-professional levels, especially among Bumiputeras. ITMs rapid development during those years came about with the expansion of its educational programmes, which was in line with the requirements of an increasingly demanding job market. Many courses were internationally affiliated and the institute had advanced diploma courses, which were equivalent to a degree. ITMs development is the best seen in three phases that span a period of 32 years in total. The first phase (1967 1976) came with the declaration of the institute as an autonomous body with its own 300-acre campus in Shah Alam and was placed under the Ministry of Rural Development. The second phase (1976 1996) saw ITM rapidly harnessing its potentials as an institution of higher learning. It led to the passing of the ITM Act of 1976 that placed the institute directly under the Ministry Of Education. Universiti Teknologi Mara (August 26, 1999) In August 1999, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad announced the change of name of ITM to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). With this acknowledgement from the government, a major restructuring exercise was carried out in order to consolidate the Universitys resources for optimum productivity. UITM PAHANG BRANCH HISTORY Founded in January 1985, UiTM Pahang began operations in a temporary campus in Kuantan. The Pahang state Government allocated 1,000 acres of land in Bandar Jengka. Constructions started in year 1988 and the campus moved from Kuantan to Bandar Jengka in May 1993. The first phase was to accommodate 2,500 students. The existence of UiTM Pahang in the Jengka region acts as a catalyst towards the development of Bandar Jengka. The former campus in Kuantan is maintained as a campus conducting flexible learning and off-campus programs. In year 2002, the Pahang campus has a total enrolment of 5,131 students, with 4,002 in Bandar Jengka campus, and 993 in Bukit Sekilau campus and 136 in the city campus of Raub. Beginning the next intake, the educational study plan will change and the campus will absorb degrees courses and the new students are lucky. FACULTY OF OFFICE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY The faculty of Office Management Technology has been located at Jengka Branch since 1993. The programs offered by the Faculty are Bachelor in Office System Management (Hons.) and Diploma in Office Management Technology. The Head of Program OM114 (diploma level) is Mrs. Norlaili binti Harun while Mr. Azmi bin Salim is the Head of Program OM 221 (degree level). These programs focus on the office administration of any organization, with emphasis on the office procedures, office management, office automation, office competencies, communication, personality development and second as well as third languages. The main objective is to enhance the backbone operations in any organization. The total number of academic staff is 25 and currently the Faculty has 800 students at Jengka branch. The faculty always makes continuous efforts to ensure that all staff are highly qualified and dedicated in their profession. Students enrolling in the program would have a great learning experience since they will be trained and guided in a friendly environment. The program has been given recognition from various industries since it was first offered. As such, besides offering the program on a full- time basis, the Faculty is also offering the program on a part-time basis. The syllabus that has been covered in diploma level is including administrative management, office competencies, business laws, communication and etc. Students graduating from the program would have promising careers in any organization. Nowadays, many companies provide the latest technology in the office to help their employees enhance their productivity in order to achieve company goals. In UiTM Pahang, the entire departments including Faculty Office Management and Technology use the basic operation software for the daily tasks. (A) Word Processing Package Word processing package is the most vital method for us to ensure our daily tasks run smoothly. Word processing package that use by our division are including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Front Page, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Publisher. During my External Industrial Training, I usually use Microsoft Word Processing in daily routine. It includes the preparation of correspondence such as memos, letters, flyers, newsletter, manual, offer letters and other types of printed communication. For me, it is a simple job task and it is easy to be done because I had learned this software through a document processing subject. Through Microsoft Word Processing, we are able to adjust the format of the letter whether it is a left bound or in a right bound format. Beside that, this software enable us to check our spelling and grammatical errors. During my practical, I have been given responsible to prepare letters for invitation speaker in Program Motivasi and Pemantapan Akademik Pelajar, Pelantikan sebagai Pelaras Khusus and others. All of the letter that has been produce by UiTM must have a letterhead, and it is compulsory to state the UiTM Motto. Sometimes, I also need to draft and type a memorandum using a correct format. Normally, Puan Norlaili bt Hj Harun asked me to prepare a memorandum to inform OM114 students about a latest information related to their Academic such as validation date and intersession program. Before that, I have problems in handling a Microsoft Excel Package. But, after been ask by my supervisor to complete a task that uses the software, I gain new knowledge and skills. I have responsible to key in the data including name of the Diplomas students and also all the information about lecturers Faculty of Office Management and Technology. Using a Microsoft Excel, it really teach me to be patient person because it so complicated to adjust the format, layout, and etc. When I am facing a problem in handling this package, Puan Norlaili bt Harun will help me. She willing to spend time to teach me on how to delete cells, edits, and adds cells and so on. I am very grateful for her guidance. (B) On The Job Training During my practical training, I had no problem with any unfamiliar package that was offered to me. For the software that I am not very familiar such as Adobe, I was trained to use the package by my supervisor through guidelines and instructions. (C) Others Office Equipment Computer During my External Industrial Training, I use my own computer because they not provided a computer for trainee. Its maybe because of insufficient budget. Actually, it is compulsory to provide a computer for each staff. Nowadays, computer becomes more vital and the purpose of providing computer is to help the entire task run smoothly. Basically, 90% of our daily task is using the computer. Through an email, the staff will communicate each other and sending the important information faster. Printer Normally computer will links with the printer. The function of the printer is to produce the output that has been process by a computer. I have been exposing in using a printer which is HP Laser Jet Printer. This printer can receive, transmit, store, print and copy any data. It also can produce copies sources such as computer file, graphic scanners, or even pictures. It uses a narrow beam of light to form images on paper. It produces beautiful printed originals with great speed. This printer also will produce an output in graphics or produce in color. Normally, I will used a printer to print an application letter, memorandum, budget, question paper, forms for external practical and also booklet. Photocopy Machine Photocopy machine produces copies directly from an original document. The original can be handwritten, printed or drawn. This machine is used to make copies of any documents. Photocopy will be made in black color or full color. One more thing that I dislike in handling a photocopy machine is when the paper has jammed or stacked. I need to check the tray one by one and put out the paper that has jammed. I have use a photocopy machine to print a letter, receipt, questions paper, brochure, monthly report, minutes of meeting and also certificates. The purpose of copying any documents is for future reference and as a backup file. Usually, the maximum number of copy is 30 copies and if it is more than that, we will riso that document. Photocopying is now widely available and is a fairly economical way to print a small number of books. Facsimiles Machine Sometimes, I need to fax a document such as a letters, proposals, syllabus courses, and forms to outside of the organization. At UiTM Pahang, facsimiles machine only provided at Examination Units and HEA (Academic Affairs Department). Before this, I think that facsimiles machine is complicated to use but later, I notice that my perception is totally wrong. Facsimiles machine is an output device that scan image and sent it electronically over the phone line to be receive by fax machine which print the signal or image the text or photo and recreate it on paper. The types of facsimiles machine that use by the organization is multifunction which is combine an impressive arrangement of office tool. A facsimile automatically reports transmission of a facsimile message upon transmitting the facsimile message. For reporting the message transmission, facsimile numbers of called parties are stored in a memory together with their corresponding telephone numbers. Then, the facsimile message is transmitted to a section called facsimile corresponding to any one of the facsimile numbers receiver. Thereafter, the facsimile immediately dials the corresponding telephone number to transmit a transmission reporting voice message. At one times, I failed to fax an important document to UiTM Shah Alam because the line is so busy. I need to try and waiting for a long time to make sure this document is successfully being sent. TELEPHONE TECHNIQUES Todays telephone technologies play a role key in the demand for worldwide communications. As a worker, we required to use a variety of technologies as well as the telephone for daily communications. These technologies will continue to evolve the organizations search for ways to increase productivity, efficiency and the quality of customer services. Telephone calls are often less time-consuming than a memo, letters or even e-mail. The telephone techniques that used in this company are really consistent with what I have taught in Office Administration II course. Because the telephone is such an important communications tool, I must use proper telephone techniques while answering incoming and making outgoing calls. To create a positive image for the organization, I do my best to develop good communication skills. The voice, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as my attitude, are important in making a good impression when communicate via telephone. During telephone conversation, I have to convey the pleasure and willingness to help, alertness and courtesy. The ensure that my voice sounds friendly; I put a smile on my face before answering the phone. In addition, I put aside any personal matter while handle any business calls. Besides that, I may request to screen calls, give information or take messages. I was instructed to use the telephone system by my supervisor. Usually, my supervisor instruct me to answer the incoming calls, setting any appointments, seeking information, making confirmation, and etc. My supervisor also taught me how to handle the callers. For all outgoing calls, the numbers begin with 9 and followed by contact number. For example, 9 0123456789 for mobile phone and 9 094602022 for any business contact. But if we want to make inside calls, we just use an extension number especially to connect with Head of Programs, lecturers or other divisions. For example, 2323 is extension number to Puan Norlaili Haji Harun, while 2020 is extension number to Financial Department, and so on and so forth. Usually, my supervisor instruct me to answer the incoming calls, setting any appointments, seeking information, making confirmation, and etc. There are several techniques that we can practice in our daily tasks while answering telephone calls: Listen carefully to the caller and try to avoid other interruption. Try to answer the telephone call within the three rings. First step, when answering a phone call is your should greet the caller, identify the caller, offering help and speaking clearly. Focus on the caller. Let the caller satisfied with your services and feel that you are really give a full attention to his/her message. Prepare yourself. Always have a pen, note book and list of the telephone extension, be ready to answer any of the questions from a caller and give accurate information for them. During telephone conversation, I have to convey the pleasure and willingness to help, alertness and courtesy. Transferring calls if necessary. Ask a few information if the caller want to leave a message. Take a message carefully and with the details information such as the caller name, company name, telephone number; date and time of the calls, message, action required and also for whom message need to be transfer. Thank the caller by using the callers name and let the caller hang first. As a trainee, I always practice myself to end the conversation with a positive tone. So, that the caller will know that we are appreciating them. RECORD MANAGEMENT Filling (Records Management) Records management is a vital component of an agencys which have wider management and information systems. The life-cycle concept, as what have been taught in record management can be seen in the three phases of the life of the record are seen as the equivalent of the three biological ages; current, semi-current and non-current records. Filing is the process of storing office records in an orderly manner within an organized system. A records management filing system is a set of procedures used to organize, store, retrieve, remove and dispose or records. The main purpose of records management systems is to ensure records are available when needed so that the organization can operates efficiently. Such a system fulfills this purpose in several ways by: using storage media, providing proper storage equipment and supplier or outlining procedures for filing. Record can be arranged more accurately by numbers because numbers are easier to read and arrange than alphabet letters. A consecutive numeric system expands quickly and easily because new numbered files can be added at the end of the system of drawers or shelves. The UiTM management, also have decided a specific number to file different types of documents such as: 100: Administrative 200: Building Assets 300: Office Equipment 400: Financial 500: Position 600: Main Function/Specific As a trainee, I have responsible to manage variety types of file and usually it happen every day. This is important to make sure all of the relevant information is updated. If the file has been full with documents, then the file need to be closed. The new file will be created and labeled with a specific code. Normally, there are five steps in managing records which is: creation, distribution, use, maintenance, and disposition. The Record Cycle: Creation Created through dictation, handwritten drafts, voice mail, electronic mail, or using computers and word processors. Created outside the business and received through e-mail, personal delivery, fax machine, voice mail and other communication delivery system. Distribution Records must be distributed to persons requiring the data. It may be sent to users within the company or outside the company. Use Used to make and documenting decisions for answering questions, references, or fax. Records used most often shortly after they created. The older records, the less used. Maintenance Filing and retrieving records occur during the maintenance phase. Organization selects filing method and design filing system for efficient retrieval records. Finding records after they have been filed is the goal of filing system. Disposition Disposition will move rarely used records and provide space for new records. During my External Industrial Training, I learned lots of valuable information and it can be concluded as the procedure that has been use in handling a record in our organization is similar with that I have learned in the syllabus of Record Management Course (Part II). COMMUNICATION Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages, whether through exchanging e-mail, giving a formal presentation, or chatting with co-workers around the espresso machine. Communication can be verbal, printed, recorded and so on. However communication is considered effective only when others understand your message correctly and respond to it the way you want them to. Effective communication will help us manage work flow, improves business relationships, enhances professionals image and also provide a variety of other important benefit. In office, Bahasa Malaysia is one of the medium and important language when communicates with each others. As a trainee, I will practiced a good communication skills when try to communicate among the staff at UiTM Pahang especially with the Director, Executive, Head of Programs/Lectures, Guards, Official Clerks and also maintenance staffs. They also give a positive feedback and willing to cooperation with me when handling specific tasks. I will often be called on to communicate across differences in gender, ethnic background, age, profession and so on. So, to make my message effective, I will use concrete language, specific detail and information that is clear, convincing, accurate and ethical. Basically, there are two types of communication which is internal communication and external communication. When we exchange information with people inside in the organization it is called as internal communication and when the information and ideas is exchanges with outside organization, is called external communication. External communication flows into and out of the organization along formal lines (carefully prepared letters, announcement, e-mail, face to face meeting and so on. Preparation of Correspondence One of my major duties is preparing letters. Most of the letters wrote have to be signed by my supervisor. Letter is one of the documents that can be used to exchange the information. When sending written communication to inside or outside of the organization, familiarize yourself with their written communication preferences and adapt your approach, style and tone to meet their expectations. Usually, I will practice a simple technique when preparing a correspondence (letters) which is: Use simple, clear language. Use precise words that do not have the potential to convey multiple meanings. For instance, the word rich has at least half a dozen different meanings, whereas wealthy has exactly one, leaving no room for ambiguity. Be brief. Use simple sentences and short paragraphs, breaking information into paragraph that are easier for your reader to understand and translate. Use transitional elements. Help readers follow your train of thought by using transitional words and phrases. Precede related points with expressions such as in additional, and first, and so on. Address correspondence properly. Use a correct address and simple salutations. During my External Industrial Training, there are three steps, which I used when preparing any letters. After identify the main points (content) that my supervisor has told, I will draft and then typing the letter according the usual format. On this step, I used my own ideas and words to complete the sentences of the letters. After print out the letters, my supervisor will check it to ensure there is no mistake and standardize. Besides that, I also responsible to wrote a memorandum. Memos are used for the routine, day-to-day exchange of information within an organization. Because of their open construction and informal method of delivery (e-mail or interoffice mail), memos are less private than letters. Normally, I will wrote a memos to inform the students about the simple briefing, to booked a laboratories for presentation and also produce memos to appreciate a certain divisions. There are several advantages when using a written media as a medium to communicate. It will allow the users to plan and control the message, offer a permanent, verifiable record and they minimize the distortion that can accompany oral messages and it can be used to avoid immediate interactions. Telecommunication Technology Used Nowadays, telecommunication technology are widely use such as switchboard, facsimile machines, teleconferencing, voice mail, e-mail, telephone and etc. At UiTM Pahang, we were using the Lotus Note (e-mail) to send or receive any information. E-mail offers speed, low cost, increased access to other employees, portability and convenience (not just overcoming time-zone problems but reaching many receivers at once). Its best for brief, noncomplex information that is time sensitive. With such a quick turnaround time, e-mail tends to be more conversational than traditional media. However, e-mail ease and speed can contribute to poorly conceived, confusing messages that waste more time than they save. When my supervisor asked me to send the information for the students or lectures, I will choose an e-mail and telephone as a medium to communicate. We can converse through e-mail and telephone if they confused, they will asked me some questions. Eventually, we should perform good communication skills because every day we will be dealing with the public. I also use facsimile machine to fax document outside the organization. Besides, in UiTM Pahang also use teleconferencing. For example teleconferencing with Vice Counselor UiTM, Dato Shahol bin Hamid. All lecture and staff need to hear the amanat from him who at UiTM Shah Alam. Travel Arrangement Travel arrangements are made in accordance with organization policy. Large firms may have a travel department for this purpose. However, smaller firms may rely on the services of a travel agency or an office worker has to make the travel arrangement for his or her boses. To prepare the travel arrangement, the officer should schedule meetings and appointments to be held during the trip. Shortly, before the trip, contact each individual with whom they plan to meet to confirm the appointment date, time, and meeting place. I had experience this task where I need to make a travel arrangement for my supervisor because she had a meeting at UiTM Shah Alam for two days. I was take to printed form from Administration division and submit it back after fill all the information required in the form. Next, the manager will check the travel management. After it has been approved, the preparation and the groundwork will be arranged. While preparing travel arrangements, usually I use telephone in making reservation in order to fulfill their needs such as accommodation, transportation and food. HUMAN RELATIONS IN THE OFFICE The term human relations in its broadest sense cover all types of interactions among people-their conflicts, cooperative efforts and group relationships. Many organization include UiTM Pahang, are organizing their workers into teams in which each employee plays a part. Organization eager to improve quality, improve job satisfaction, increase worker participation in decision making and problem solving and improve customer service is turning to teams. When working in teams, it can achieve a higher level of performance than individuals because of the combined intelligence and energy of the group. For example, OMSA (Office Management Students Association), KIK (Creative Innovative Group), PSKK (Sport Association), and also the management at UiTM Pahang are already worked in team. They will interact each other and try to resolve a problem together during a meeting. Besides that, they also will organize a program to improve a relationship among the staff, lecture and also students. I had experiences in team activities such as OPKIM (Operasi Khidmat Masyarakat) organize by Faculty of Office Management and Technology which held at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Tahan, Jerantut. Through these activities, all of the staff can be familiar with each other and it will create a friendly environment in the office.
